Winter Singles League - Latest Results

Dear ELTC member,

The Winter Singles League is now entering it's third and final session and the race to win is hotting up. There are 3 categories of prizes, winner and runner up, most improved player and most games played awarded to both men and women in each section. After much number crunching the following is how these categories currently stand entering this last period.

Race for the Winner and Runner up.

Unfortunately Howard Scott and Ben Moyon, winner and runner up of the second session have had to withdraw. I would like to congratulate them on their achievements to date and wish them the very best of luck with their forthcoming endeavours.

Mehdi Aissani currently stands tall at the top of the league, with Vincent Gaugry in second place, being pressed hard by James Lloyd in third. The other 3 in contention are Jonathan Yip, Ben Clarke and Jack Brooker.

For the women, that most consistent of performers and one that has been winning this award for many years, standing head and shoulders above the competition.... Mili Shah. Mili is in League 1 just a few places behind our top men's players. Battling it out for second place are Sangeeta Arora, Tonia Gann and Katy Fairweather. All are sitting in close proximity in leagues 3B and 3C, so the outcome of this tussle should prove to be both interesting and exiting.

The Most Improved Player

These are the 'movers and shakers' of the WSL, those players who have progressed the furthest up the league from their original seeded positions. For the women, sitting in pole position 9 places above her rival is Tonia Gann who has risen a massive 25 places up the league. Delainey Ackerman has moved 16 placed and is in second spot followed by Henrietta Marsh-Smith (11 places) and Sangeeta Arora (8 places)

For the men, Benjamin Lam is in top spot having moved 20 places, followed by Richard Liang, 17 places. Others in contention are Simon Garforth-Bles (14 places) Simon Amslinger (12) James Hansen (11) Edward Rives (8) Najjal Joshi (8) Mehdi Aissani (8) Jack Townson (7) and Salvador Oliver (7)

Most Games Played

I recognise that this award is tilted in favour of the lower leagues as their leagues often have more players affording them the opportunity of playing more matches, but in my view that's no bad thing.

Deborah Sheppard currently has 14 matches under her belt after just two rounds, followed by Delainey Ackerman, Anita Kowalska and Sangeeta Arora on 11 games. Judith Loffhagen has played 10.

For the men, Hal Keenleyside, Amit Putty and Jathu Shasiharan have all played 14 matches, followed by;

Giannis Goutas (13)
Paul Hill (13)
Adrian Yip (12)
Daniel Radice (12)
Mitch Suzuki (12)
Fahad Abdi (11)
Andy J Thompson (11)
Tim Earl (11)
Will Hesketh (11)

Well done to all those above, who have battled through a very wet and hard winter to put themselves in contention for a top prize.I think you all deserve a spell of sunshine and dry weather !

I hope you all keep pushing hard and by doing so, continue to improve both your tennis and fitness.

Good luck to all in the next round.

Mike Knibbs
